Beautiful head pieces…

When it comes to gorgeous head wear that doesn’t cost the earth Folky Dokey is where it’s at. The floral head pieces for children and adults are perfect for any occasion, whilst the bouquets would be fabulous for a wedding, giving that individual touch. Established by Gez Batey in 2014, the shop is constantly expanding. I was intrigued to know how the ideas came about and more about the lady behind the beautiful pieces.

How would you describe your style?

My style is varied, I mix things up a lot and have little interest in fitting in or keeping to trend. I’m short and curvy so learnt early on that I suit clothes from the 50s and 80’s with nipped in waists and bizarrely I can really rock shoulder pads. I’ve been wearing Vintage for around 14 years now but am still partial to the rare Top Shop purchase and adore their collaborations with Kate Moss.

Who do you see wearing your designs? Do you have people in mind when making them?

I see my customers as women who dress to make themselves happy. It takes a cool confident woman to do her Sunday shop in one of my statement crowns. I’d love to design for Paloma Faith as I admire her style so much but my dream order would be to make something Vivienne Westwood would wear for a garden party.

Are you a flats girl or a heel devotee?

My heart says heels but my 34 yr old head says flats.

What are your favourite accessories?

Errrrrrm Flower crowns haha! I don’t really do jewellery but I adore Head scarves. I have far too many but they are all so beautiful I could never part with them.

Tell us a little about your designs, and what inspired them?

My designs come from somewhere deep inside my head, I often sit back after making a beautiful mess of dried flowers and wire thinking “where the hell did that come from”. I have a very busy mind which means I’m spontaneous and rarely plan, saying that the industry I’m in is strongly trend lead and I have to take notice, I just twist the trends by adding my own style.

What’s your go to ‘uniform’ on a day to day basis i.e. your ‘cannot live without them’ pieces?

Kirby grips for my beehive, Rimmel exaggerate Noir eyeliner, Mac Ruby Woo lipstick. A vintage dress, black tights and my old faithful suede embroidered slouch boots. I love them boots!
